Stay Inspired and Revitalised This Spring with Ayurveda

Updated: Apr 11

Spring is upon us. Winter’s accumulated snow and ice are beginning to melt. Gentle rains soak the land, and the earth feels heavy with moisture—saturated and fertile. All around us, there’s movement. Seeds begin to germinate, flowers bud, insects return, and nature starts to stir awake.

And just like the earth, we too begin to feel this shift—subtle yet powerful. Our physiology recognises spring as a time for renewal, a chance to lighten up, release accumulated heaviness, and step into the new year with clarity and vitality.

But while spring brings joy and inspiration, it can also stir up kapha—the dosha of water and earth—leading to allergies, fatigue, acne, weight gain, sluggish digestion, and even depression. According to Ayurveda, these health issues stem from ama—toxins—that build up when digestion is weak and seasonal transitions are not honoured.

The good news? Spring is the best time to gently cleanse and rebalance your system. With the right seasonal routine and diet, you can emerge from winter not just lighter in body, but clearer in mind, and more inspired in spirit.

Ayurveda’s View on Spring & Kapha

In Ayurveda, spring is kapha season. The qualities of kapha—cold, moist, heavy, dull, slow—are amplified during this time, especially after the cold, stagnant winter months.

If kapha accumulates unchecked, it can lead to:

  • Sinus congestion & seasonal allergies

  • Aches, stiffness, and water retention

  • Lethargy, brain fog & low motivation

  • Skin issues like acne & dullness

  • Weight gain and slow metabolism

  • Low immunity & frequent colds

This is why spring is considered a crucial time for cleansing. Just as snow melts and rivers flow again, kapha starts to liquefy in the body—creating the perfect opportunity to mobilise and release stored toxins.

Your Spring Diet: Lighten Up to Rejuvenate

As nature shifts, our internal cravings shift too. Heavy foods no longer feel satisfying. Our bodies begin to crave lighter, drier, spicier, and more bitter foods to rebalance moisture and awaken sluggish digestion.

Here’s how to eat during spring:

🌿 Favour the pungent, bitter & astringent tastes– Think: leafy greens, turmeric, ginger, fenugreek, black pepper, kale, asparagus, mustard seeds, mung dal.

🌿 Keep meals light & warm– Warm, spiced vegetable soups, khichdi, steamed greens, barley, quinoa, and cooked legumes are your friends.

🌿 Limit heavy, sweet, oily & cold foods– Avoid dairy, fried foods, sweets, and raw or cold meals. They aggravate kapha and clog the channels of elimination.

🌿 Sip warm water with ginger, lemon & honey– This helps flush toxins and supports digestion.

🌿 Embrace green vegetables & bitter herbs– Dandelion, nettle, neem, moringa, and triphala support liver cleansing and skin purification.

🌿 Eat with awareness– Reduce snacking and eat only when truly hungry. Your digestive fire needs space to burn bright.

Lifestyle Rituals to Embrace the Spring Shift

Spring is a season to energise your mornings and move your body out of winter’s slow rhythm.

🌞 Wake up before 6 am– This is vata time: light, clear, and full of potential. It helps reduce heaviness and promotes clarity.

🛁 Daily self-massage (abhyanga)– Use warm, dry oils like mustard or sesame, followed by a hot shower. For more stimulation, try garshana (dry brushing).

🧘🏽‍♀️ Move your body daily– Favour energising practices like brisk walking, yoga (sun salutations, twists, backbends), or dancing.

💨 Practice kapalabhati & bhastrika pranayama– These fiery breathwork practices clear sluggish energy and boost metabolism.

🔥 Kindle your digestive fire (agni)– Use herbs like trikatu, ginger tea, or warm water sips throughout the day to stoke digestion.

🎨 Play, create, connect– Spring is a time for joy. Reconnect with your creative spirit, spend time with loved ones, or try something new.

Spring Cleanse: A Gentle Reset for Body & Mind

If there’s one thing to do this season, it’s a cleanse. Ayurveda doesn’t believe in extreme detoxes or fads—instead, it offers gentle but powerful ways to reset your digestion, balance your doshas, and release ama.

A spring cleanse can:

✔️ Clear allergies and congestion

✔️ Boost energy & mental clarity

✔️ Improve skin, hair & immunity

✔️ Reduce cravings and emotional eating

✔️ Restore a deep connection to yourself

You can start with 3–7 days of:

  • Simple meals like khichdi, vegetable soups, or warm stews

  • Herbal teas & digestive tonics

  • Gentle yoga, breathwork & rest

  • No snacking, cold foods, or late nights

  • Light journaling or meditating to release mental ama

If you're ready for a deeper cleanse, consider a personalised Ayurvedic detox to suit your constitution and current imbalances.

Cleansing Breakfast Idea: Pepper Pongal

You may already love khichdi – but Pepper Pongal is its spicy, comforting cousin. It uses similar ingredients but the taste is entirely different — thanks to the toasted black pepper, ginger, and curry leaves.

It’s easy to digest, packed with protein, healthy carbs, and good fats, and makes for a perfect breakfast during your spring cleanse.

🌿 Pepper Pongal Recipe (serves 2)

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup split yellow moong dal

  • ½ cup sona masoori rice (or any short grain rice, avoid basmati during cleanse)

  • 2 tbsp ghee (or coconut oil for vegan)

  • 1 tsp black pepper (freshly crushed)

  • 1 tsp cumin seeds

  • 1 tsp grated ginger

  • 5-6 fresh curry leaves (wilted or frozen won't give the same flavour)

  • 1/4 tsp of asafoetida (hing)

  • Rock salt to taste

  • 4 cups water

  • Handful of fresh coriander leaves

Method:

  • Wash moong dal and rice thoroughly.

  • Dry roast the moong dal until lightly golden, then rinse again.

  • Heat ghee in a pot, add cumin seeds, black pepper, and ginger. Sauté for a minute.

  • Add turmeric, moong dal, and rice. Stir well.

  • Add water and salt, bring to a boil, then reduce heat and cover. Cook for 20 minutes or 8 mins in a Instapot (natural pressure release)

  • Garnish with coriander leaves and serve warm.
